Traditions – April Blue Fern Studio

I made my layout for the Blue Fern Studios April Challenge with a picture of “the cousins” from Thanksgiving.  We have a tradition (which the kids don’t love) to take a group photo of all the cousins when we have a family party.

Here is the sketch:

April 2014 BFS Sketch

I used the Blue Fern Garden paper, a stencil, texture paste and several paints for the background.  This paper is nice and thick and holds up to mixed media well.

I covered about 80% of the chipboard in embossing powder and heat set it and then filled the empty space with Twinkling H2O’s paint.

Blue Fern Gardens Timeless paper, Spring Frame and Flourish chipboard

I love this funny picture of my daughter and her friends taken after their school play.

I used the mood board at Sassy Scrappers for this layout idea.  I loved the colors and the shiny black hearts.

I actually cut out the quote for the mood board and used it as part of my layout.

I made lots of layers on this, things I thought went with the mood board and the colors of the kids’ costumes.

I covered the chipboard title with gold embossing powder and all of these little chipboard hearts with black ink and then Glossy Accents to try to get them to look like the mood board images.

I Can – Scrap Around The World

Totally stepping out of my comfort zone here… a picture of myself.

The mood board at Scrap Around The World is amazing as usual.

I was inspired by the whole thing, but the quote most of all – because I

overthink EVERYTHING!

There is lots of “white space” on this layout even though the crackle stencil covers the whole background, but it is covered in gesso.  I stenciled with texture paste over that and left it white too.  Just a few splatters of paint for color.

Prima wire thread and lots of fussy cut butterflies to follow the mood board.

Girls On Fire

I made this layout for the Scrap & Music challenge, which was to use the lyrics from “Girl On Fire”.  The picture is taken after my daughters basketball game where they won the championship so the lyrics fit perfectly.  Here is the sketch (I rotated it 90 degrees):

I did the background with gesso, washi tape, twinkling H2O’s, some stamping and gelatos.

The title word was made with the new Prima wire thread, which is lots of fun.

Some flowers, some Prima wood icons, drywall tape, drinking straws, cheesecloth and bakers twine (half of that list are kitchen items !)

Always With Us

The April Sketch Challenge at Once Upon A Sketch has a journaling theme of “An Event that Changed My Life”.  I decided to choose something a little difficult…

My father died 6 months before my wedding.  While hiking on our honeymoon a blue jay followed us most of the whole day, and let us get strangely close to it.  At some point we joked it was my Dad keeping an eye on us.  From that point forward, a blue jay has appeared in all of my brothers’ and sisters’ lives whenever something important was happening.  It has now become our family reminder that he is Always With Us.

Anyway….here is the sketch.  My journaling is on a tag tucked behind the black and white photo.

The background is crumpled tissue paper attached with gel medium, followed by a gesso whitewash, and gelatos.  I also used torn strips of paper, washi tape and rub ons to finish the background.

I colored white flowers with paint, chalk ink and gesso.  Also a few micro beads.

Thanks for looking.  I am going to frame this and give it to my mom for Easter.

This is a layout I made for the C’est Magnifique April Challenge

I used the April kit and the April Mixed Media Add On Kit, both of which have so much awesomeness I didn’t know where to start.

This stencil is quickly becoming a favorite.  Here I used the 2 paints that came with the mixed media kit.

The rest of the background is another stencil, some mist, gelatos and stamps.
